Buying beef in bulk can make meal planning more convenient, especially when you cook regularly and have room to store a variety of cuts. The right purchase starts with your household’s needs—not simply the largest order available. Here is what Cleveland shoppers should consider before stocking up.

Choose the size that fits your household

“Bulk beef” can mean a large roll of ground beef, a curated beef package, a whole cut prepared into portions, or a front quarter, hind quarter or side. These options offer different amounts and assortments.

The Prime Meats October flyer lists front and hind quarters at approximate weights of 175–200 pounds each, and a side of beef at approximately 350–400 pounds, all at current market price. These are the flyer’s listed approximate weights. Ask which weight basis is used for billing and how much packaged meat to expect before using those figures in a meal or freezer plan.

If you mainly cook burgers, a smaller ground-beef purchase may suit you better than an assortment of steaks and roasts. If your family enjoys several types of beef meals, compare a package with the larger quarter or side options.

Ask what the quoted price includes

Before comparing two bulk offers, ask whether the quote uses hanging weight, the weight of a whole cut, or finished packaged weight. Those are different measures. Trimming, bones and cutting choices can affect the amount of usable meat you take home.

Ask for an estimated total—not just a per-pound number—and confirm what is included. Prime Meats’ bulk-beef flyer states that the price per pound includes cutting, wrapping and labeling. Confirm the terms for the specific order you choose, along with availability and pickup arrangements.

Compare the assortment with your menu

A front quarter and a hind quarter offer different mixes of cuts. The October flyer lists front-quarter items such as chuck roast, brisket, short ribs, rib steaks and ground beef. The hind-quarter list includes T-Bone, Porterhouse, sirloin and round cuts, rump roast and ground beef.

Think beyond steak night. Will you use roasts, stew meat and ground beef too? Ask about the cutting choices available, how packages are portioned and whether any substitutions are allowed. Do not assume a package can be customized: the flyer’s family packages specify no substitutions.

Make room before you order

Take a freezer inventory and remove the items you plan to cook soon. Then ask about the expected number and size of packages. Storage needs depend on the actual packaged order and your freezer’s layout, so a visual check is more useful than guessing from the advertised weight alone.

Keep a freezer at 0°F or below. Label your packages with the cut, quantity and date, and keep an inventory so older purchases are used first. USDA’s freezing guide explains storage and quality considerations.

Start with a conversation

Tell The Meat People how many people you cook for, which beef meals you enjoy and how much freezer space you have. Ask about current market prices and the order that fits your plans.
