Two steak packages can carry similar names and very different prices. Before deciding which is the better buy, compare what you actually receive. A few simple checks can help you make a fair comparison and choose a steak that fits your dinner plans.
Start with the same cut
Compare ribeye with ribeye and T-Bone with T-Bone when possible. A price difference between two different cuts does not tell you which is the better value for your meal.
Also check whether the steak is bone-in or boneless. The package weight of a bone-in steak includes the bone. That does not make bone-in a bad purchase, but it matters when planning how many people a package will feed. Compare the style you enjoy and the amount you need, rather than assuming two equal-weight packages offer identical portions.
Check the beef grade
Look for the stated USDA quality grade, or ask the butcher. Choice and Select are different grades; a fair comparison takes that into account. USDA describes Choice beef as having more marbling than Select, while Prime generally has more marbling than Choice. Grade is one consideration alongside the cut and your cooking plan. Read USDA’s grade guide.
Compare price per pound and total cost
Use the per-pound price to compare the rate, then check the package weight to understand the bill. For example, a 1.5-pound steak at $14.99 per pound costs about $22.49. A one-pound package at the same rate costs $14.99. The larger package is not more expensive per pound; you are buying more steak.
If two steaks have different thicknesses, think about how you will cook and serve them. A thicker steak may fit a shared dinner, while individual portions may suit another meal. Ask about cutting options before committing to a package that does not fit your plans.
Use this quick shopping checklist
- Same cut and comparable USDA grade?
- Bone-in or boneless?
- Same price-per-pound basis?
- How much does the whole package cost?
- Does a minimum quantity apply?
- Do the portions fit your meal or freezer plan?
